About this course

This course provides a basic introduction to the fascinating world of genealogy and equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to research births, marriages, deaths and Census information in the UK, whilst developing ICT skills. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical activities, participants will learn how to navigate genealogical records, use online resources effectively, and develop essential ICT functional skills.

What will I study?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of genealogy and its importance in personal and historical research
  • Identify and locate relevant birth, marriage, death, and Census records in the UK via a variety of sources
  • Utilize various online resources and tools to conduct basic genealogical research effectively
  • Apply entry-level 3 ICT functional skills to genealogical research activities
  • Compile and organize genealogical information into a coherent family tree

You will also be able to:

  • Identify and set research goals
  • Create and use spreadsheets for data organisation and analysis
  • Use basic formatting tools to modify text appearance, such as font size, style, and color
  • Use hyperlinks to access additional information or external resources
  • Create and store files and folders on your PC
  • Conduct basic online searches using search engines
  • Evaluate and select relevant information from search results
  • Navigate websites and understand the structure of web pages
  • Create a family tree using SmartArt (or equivalent)
  • Present genealogical research effectively in PowerPoint
  • Insert and manipulate images, including resizing and positioning
  • Apply basic editing techniques, such as copy, cut, and paste, to manipulate and rearrange content
  • Use email to send and receive messages, including attachments

Entry Requirements

How will I be assessed?

Participants' understanding, and progress will be assessed through a combination of activities and a final project/presentation that demonstrates ability to apply the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course. 

Access to the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) or alternative is required to complete the activities.

Although there are free websites that will aid your research and enable you to complete the activities during the course, please note that some suggested websites require a pay per view, subscription, or have free, limited access at local libraries. Additionally, local record office websites, archives, and regional genealogical societies may also provide access to records specific to their respective areas.
